Welcome & Announcements
Thank you for worshipping remotely with us. This resource is meant to help the Melrose Chapel family share in worship even though we can't be together in person. May you be blessed today and always.
Call to Worship (words by Julia Seymour)
The day came and they were all in one place, in one place, in one place.
Being together, being in one space, breathing the same air, saying the same words
had seemed like the most important thing.
The most important thing.
Then there was a sound- like a rush of wind.
Then there was a sound- the sound of things changing
Then there was a sound- suddenly nothing was the same.
Those who were gathered received new languages.
Those who were gathered received new dialects.
Those who were gathered received new understanding.
Those who were gathered received new power.
Those who were gathered received the Holy Spirit in a new way.
It became clear immediately that what was important had changed.
Immediately it was clear that was important had changed.
What was important had changed. Immediately. That was clear.
Being in one space was not a priority.
Speaking in unison was not a priority.
Being all together to breathe the same air was not a priority.
The power of the Holy Spirit rearranged their priorities to align them with God’s.
God’s priority of diversity,
God’s priority of widespread grace,
God’s priority of neighbors and community,
God’s priority of stepping out, reaching out, being out in the world.
The world that God loves.
The world that is God’s priority.
Being aligned with God’s priorities, it felt, it feels like being on fire.
Holy One, ignite within us a fiery passion for your mission in the world today. Warm us by the Spirit’s dancing tongues of flame, that we may feel your kindling blaze within, urging us to do your greater good. Make us wholly present to experience a new birth, and awaken possibilities within us to share your love in the world. In this love and abundance, we come to celebrate your harvest— a harvest bearing the first fruits of the Spirit within us.
Show us how to use these gifts, as we listen for your truth in the gentle breeze of your Spirit. Amen.
Be sure to join us on Zoom at 9:00 am on May 31 as we gather for a time of greeting, friendship, prayer, and reflection. Find the link to join at the bottom of this online worship page. Did you miss that time? Not to worry! A recording will be made and placed on this page as well.
Joys & Concerns
What's on your heart today? Do you have worries or concerns? Do you find things to be thankful for? Whatever is in your heart, God wants to hear it. Take this time to prayerfully reflect on your needs and those things for which you are thankful. When you've shared this in prayer and allowed God to sit with you a bit in this time, close your time of prayer with the Lord's Prayer or other words that are upon your heart:
Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, Forever and ever. Amen.
If you have a prayer need that you would like to share, please consider submitting a prayer request here. Please ensure that you have appropriate permission to submit the need. If you need to speak with the pastor concerning this request, please indicate that in your request.
Tithes & Offering
Until we return to in-person worship, please consider mailing in your tithes and offerings. Let us share our gratitude for the grace we have received by giving freely to a world in need of joy, hope, and peace.
O God, we recognize that we have been blessed with great abundance. In offering these gifts, may we be strengthened to proclaim your faithfulness this day and always. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Consider listening to the following songs/hymns that echo our message for today:
Spirit of the Living God
We come together from many places, trusting in the Spirit more than ever, to draw us together.
Come, Holy Spirit!
We come together to become the Body of Christ, knit together by the Spirit.
Come, Holy Spirit!
We come together, ready to be surprised, ready to be courageous, ready to follow where the Spirit leads us.
Come, Holy Spirit!
And now, we go forth in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. To God be the glory!
SUNDAY, MAY 24, 9:00 AM
How has God been speaking to you in the message and the songs? Continue to open your heart and mind to God's will for you and for Melrose Chapel. To God be the glory!
